Okay…yep I said it. I’ll say it again. Article Marketing Is Bullshit! Now before you get the posse together and storm the door let me issue a bit of a disclaimer.
1. The following article directory sites are excluded from the above referenced statement:
a. EzineArticles
b. Associated Content
c. GoArticles
d. ArticleBase
All of the other directories and websites that you submit articles to with all of these new-fangled “spinner directories” or lame article sites are absolutely worthless.
You’re wasting your time buying products that promise you tons of backlinks or great search engine rankings. That my friends is bullshit!
But hey, don’t believe me, do your own research. See for yourself and it is easy to see that all of these guys pushing article marketing are feeding you a line of BS. All you are doing is fattening their bank accounts buying crap that is meaningless and useless.
Here’s a hint. THERE’S NO SUBSTITUTE FOR HARD WORK! Here’s another…IF IT WAS EASY EVERYONE WOULD BE DOING IT!
I challenge you to find an article in the top 10 of ANY meaningful search term wherein an article that you have written has shown up in the top 10 in Google on any article site anywhere. (with the exception of the above referenced major article directories).
Can’t find one can you? And in fact EzineArticles won’t even accept an article that appears anywhere else so that’s clue numero uno that article marketing is BS. Hey, I’m not saying that you can’t be successful in making money online by using the big directories. They get tons of traffic and it is most assuredly worth the effort to submit to those directories. But the last time I checked it was free to submit to those directories.
You don’t need a guru or a product to submit to EA. Just write a quality article and submit it yourself. Heck take an hour or so and write 4 unique articles and submit a different one to each of the big directories mentioned above and that’s all the article marketing that you need.
Heck write 4 more the next day and rinse and repeat…but whatever you do don’t buy into the bullshit that sending out 1,000 articles is going to get you on page one of Google or get you an ass load of backlinks. It simply isn’t true.
Want more proof? Do a link check in Google or Yahoo and see if the site with all of those articles show any links. Yes, I know Google doesn’t show every link or may be delayed for a bit , but if you are supposedly going to get a ton of backlinks shouldn’t some of them be showing up?
These purveyors of bullshit count on the fact that you don’t know how to check backlinks. Otherwise they would issue a guarantee with their product. It’s quite simple. Why not just say if “you use my article marketing product and don’t receive at least 300 backlinks then you get your money back”. You’ll NEVER hear an article marketing company say that…why, because it ain’t ever gonna happen.
Let me ask you a quick question which should shed further light on this for you and hopefully save you some cash. If all it took was to send out 1,000′s of articles and you would generate tons of backlinks. Ready for it….why isn’t every news story ever published by the Associated Press number one in Google? Surely it’s distributed to 1,000′s of high ranking news sites. Beyond that…if there are so many people buying these products are we saying each person is working in a unique niche? Because otherwise wouldn’t everyone be on the front page of Google.
Think about that. If I submit an article to a gazillion directories about beetle wings, and you submit an article to a gazillion directories about beetle wings and someone else does the same…why are we all not on the front page of Google for beetle wings? I’ll tell you why..article marketing is bullshit.
You want backlinks? Then you need to bust your hump and work it. You want useful and unique content? Then start a blog, utilize Social Bookmarking and Web 2.0 sites to help push your content and generate meaningful backlinks.
You want to support your blog or site with meaningful articles from strong sites, then write unique content for each of the big 4 and submit to them and then link to those articles and follow the procedure mentioned in the previous paragraph.
Internet marketing is work. It can be very lucrative work…but work nonetheless. Don’t get so caught up in the Internet Lifestyle to think that you don’t have to work to enjoy it.
If you have any doubt that article marketing is bullshit, please do research as shown above before you leave me some lame comment about how I am so wrong. I’ve done the research, I challenge you to do the same.

Hey Barry,
Interesting post about your view of article marketing. What about the Mass Article Control product that just came out? Do you think that is garbage as well? What about Article Blueprint?
Interested in hearing your thoughts…
hey Dustin…we promoted the Mass Article Control product and then we got emails from people and I began following up. As I said in the article…other than the 4 majors I never see anything worthwhile and the links that supposedly get generated are crap links that are meaningless.
That’s just my opinion but no one has been able to show me anything to the contrary and as such my feelings stand in regards to the benefits of article marketing.
Here’s the deal, I am sure it may work on some far flung niche but I don’t believe in the “niche” anymore either. I want to be in a competitive market..why? Because that means people are spending LOTS of money and I just have to work to capture a portion for it to be profitable. We’re working on a case study right now so hopefully we’ll be able to show you how we do it in big , competitive markets
Thanks for the prompt reply. What about all those traffic stats and stuff they show?
Really sucks that there are so many different opinions on what works and what doesn’t that its hard to really know when you’re doing what works. Especially for newbies like me
…” about all those traffic stats and stuff they show”..funny thing..they NEVER show you the domain that gets all of that traffic do they?
Before you buy anything, do the research ask pointed questions If it works so well why don’t they create a throw away domain to test out their crap on and then if it works then you can clearly see it. Otherwise it’s probably, as I say above, Bullshit.
You see we all know how to check backlinks on domains…so there’s a reason they don’t ever show it. I respect not showing their money site but if it works like they say it does then show me how it works on a dummy site…ain’t ever gonna happen
You stated the following:
“You want backlinks? Then you need to bust your hump and work it. ”
Just curious if you do not use article marketing to create your backlinks what do you do?
Hey Jim,
i’m not sure if you’re question is rhetorical or not. For instance, this blog has something like 20,000 links between all of its articles and subdomain blogs and folders and is a PR5 or 6 (you see PR 3 because we redirected when we decided to move into Internet marketing) and we have never sought out backlinks in any fashion.
We also have over 4,500 pages of completely unique content…so my statement that you quoted is exactly correct. Most will never work to the point that we did and as such resort to article marketing like it’s some nectar from the gods when in fact if they busted their hump they could do it on their own sites and retain the enjoyment of the links and PR on their own.
I could tell ya more but then I’d have to charge ya! Well…who knows..maybe we’ll do a free report on it.
Bottom line is this…you can create whatever you want and get as many backlinks as you want on your own. Most article marketing links are PR0 or less backlinks from useless directories. There are the big 5 or so which help a bit in the rankings but 99% are crap…unless you’re looking to rank for “yellow aardvarks in San Antonio”..then by all means..do all the article marketing you want.
