I did not need a special report to know this. I only had to look in my own home to come to this conclusion. My wife and my college attending daughter are all over Twitter, Facebook…etc. I mean for hours at a time. So when I read arecent report by Pingdom, it only served to underscore that which I already knew. If you want to make money on the Internet then you had better be involved in social media and have offers that appeal to women.
Makes you wonder why so many of the gurus are men doesn’t it? It also makes me think that the industry is ripe for the taking for the right female guru. But back to the report.
The Pingdom report says that 84%of the social media sites have more female users than male users. While men seem to focus more on news sites like Digg and Reddit and while Twitter and Facebook are just slightly skewed towards women, almost all of the other social media sites are dominated by female users.
So the information in this report brings about two questions for me.
1. Why are more women involved in Social Media than men? Perhaps it’s by it’s very name, a more social aspect of the Internet and more suited to women. Have women found that they can network for everything from career and business information to family and home concerns? Are men not as skilled on the use of social media sites? Are men too busy trying to sell on Social Media sites instead of networking and interacting? I don’t have the answer and would love to know your take on it.
2. And this is the big question… what can we do as Internet marketers to turn those obviously savvy women into customers? If they are that involved in Social Media they have surely seen pitch after failed pitch and can sniff out hype and BS. So the marketing message that reaches the female social media user needs to be very well strategized. What’s your social media strategy? How are you going to reach out to women online?
I think it’s important for those seeking to make their share of the Internet money pie to come up with a very defined social media strategy designed to capture these women.
