Volcano Erupts In Sumatra | First Time In 400 Years

Early in the morning today, in North Sumarta, Indonesia, the Mount Sinabung Volcano has finally erupted after a long wait of nearly 400 years. Among the indigenous peoples, the volcano is known as Gunung Sinabung, and has compelled over 18,000 people from over 14 different villages to evacuate in a hurry.

The ash cloud was gushing up into the sky for up to one mile high, able to be seen from outer space. The lava flow has begun to flow down the volcano, putting people’s lives and property in harm’s way. The lava is coming from the center of the crater at a very quick pace.

Mount Sinabung is located in the Karo Plateau of Northern Sumatra, and has been an inactive volcano since the early 1600′s. Two people died, one from breathing problems and the other from a heart attack, and two suffered injuries in road accidents as trucks, ambulances and buses were mobilised in the rescue operation.

The Pacific Rim of Fire is where Indonesia is located along. It is an bow of fault lines and volcanoes around the Pacific Basin, which has the most eruptions in the Pacific. This eruption has triggered the most dire of alerts, the Red Volcano Alert.

Masks have been provided to 7,000 refugees by the Indonesian government, who has also set up kitchens so people can have food.

“The situation is under control. Emergency response teams are already on the scene,” said Priyadi Kardono of the National Disaster Management Agency.

The country of Indonesia is known for volcanoes. They are the largest chain of islands that have formed tectonically in the whole world.

“Since this is the first eruption we’ve had in Sinabung, we’re anticipating residents to remain at the shelters for at least a week while waiting for further status alert,” said Priyadi Kardono, a spokesman at the national disaster management agency.

Residents panicked when the volcano started erupting overnight and some of them who live in safer areas chose to take refugee at shelters, Kardono added.

A local official, Muhammed Ursal said “We felt strong tremors last night. It was a volcanic quake. After that, the crater of Mount Sinabung spewed glowing lava. And trees in the mount slopes were burnt. It was followed by thick clouds that caused visibility to be only about five meters. We soon helped locals to evacuate to safer locations,”
