Mike Wise Big Ben Twitter Hoax Gets Him In Hot Water At Washington Post

Mike Wise has gotten himself into quite a bit of trouble at the Washington Post for mis-Tweeting false news about Pittsburgh quarterback, Ben Rothlisberger.

As a journalist, he has to follow the integrity of the rules of the game, and it seems that he over-stepped his limits. The highly respected Washington Post has suspended Mike Wise for one month.

It was a move that Wise now regrets, as his seeming arrogance as a journalist comes into question. Readers are questioning his true intentions, to report the news fairly, or to patronize the subscribers, who are justifiably upset by the false information Wise released.

It didn’t seem to matter which medium Mike Wise had used to incorrectly put out false information, in this age of instant news, it shows up everywhere, and there is in Undo button. Once it’s out there, you are stuck with it.

“My bosses at the Post feel I need a month to think about the severity of my actions,” Wise said at the beginning of his Washington, D.C. radio show on Tuesday morning.

On the now-infamous Tweet, Wise tweeted that he had been told the NFL would suspend Pittsburgh Steelers quarterback Ben Roethlisberger for five games. “Roethlisberger will get five games, I’m told,” Wise tweeted in a short missive that would have been major news in the NFL, if it were true.

About an hour later, Wise revealed that it wasn’t true. He tweeted sarcastically that his source was “a casino employee in Lake Tahoe” (a tasteless joke about the fact that a casino employee in Lake Tahoe has accused Roethlisberger of raping her), and he said on his radio show (which was airing at the same time that he was tweeting) that he made the whole thing up.  His reason, Wise said, was to prove that “anybody will print anything.”

Wise explained on the radio that by posting inaccurate information (a false claim that he had been told the NFL would suspend Ben Roethlisberger for five games), he thought he was demonstrating how easily other outlets will pick up and pass along inaccurate information.

“I tried to showcase the absurdity of bad journalism,” Wise said. “I could give you 10 reasons why I did this and what went wrong in the execution. I made a horrendous mistake, using my Twitter account that identifies me as a Washington Post columnist.

Wise said he hopes he hasn’t damaged the Post’s credibility — or his own.

“Our worst moments should not define us,” said Wise, a columnist who often delights in ripping others for their worst moments. “I’m paying the price I should for careless, dumb behavior.”
