Arizona Sheriff Arpaio of Maricopa County Gets Sued By U.S. Justice Department
In a new lawsuit, the United States Justice Department is filing a suit against Arizona Sheriff Joe Arpaio, the controversial lawman who regularly arrests illegal immigrants in his home state. He gets in the spotlight time and again for his stance against the aliens, saying that the rest of the U.S. sees only what they are shown on the mainstream media. He claims that the law-lessness in AZ has gotten completely out of control, and all he is doing is following the law as it is written.
The Justice Department want to sue Arpaio for not cooperating with it’s investigation about allegations that he continually discriminates the Hispanic population in his town. They claim his program to crack down is interfering with their civil rights, and they are going to pursue him in court.
Maricopa County Sheriff Arpaio continually conducts arrest sweeps rounding up illegals, usually trying to stop the drug smuggling that has created violence there, and at the border. There are huge numbers of Mexicans trying to sneak into this country every hour, and Arpaio claims he is doing his job, nothing more.
His suppression on aliens has pushed the issue to the forefront of national news. Obama’s team is in a legal battle with Arizona because of the rigorous new law against illegal immigration Arizona passed in April of 2010.
The Justice Department had been in negotiations with Arpaio to obtain documents related to the crackdown as well as admittance to the county’s jails, but those talks broke down and the agency filed a lawsuit to compel his cooperation with the investigation.
“It is lamentable that the department was forced to resort to litigation to gain access to public documents and facilities,” Thomas Perez, assistant attorney general for the Justice Department’s civil rights division, said in a statement.
A representative for Arpaio had no immediate comment but expected the sheriff to issue a statement later on Thursday.
Hispanic activists, civic authorities and civil rights activists have denounced Arpaio’s sweeps as identical to racial profiling, a charge he has denied.
In July, a federal judge in Arizona obstructed the state from enforcing a strict new immigration law that would have required police to determine the immigration status of a person detained or arrested if the officer believed the person was not in the country legally.
