The previous game had the Marlins winning. However, the Florida Marlins are looking at the win with mixed feelings. The game went up to 10 innings for the Fins to finally pull out a 1-0 win with a inning-ending walk off single, at the Sun Life Stadium.
Hayes got injured by holding on to the ball as Morgan came barreling towards him at home plate, creating a bit of excitement after the collision, spurring the Marlins on to win.
The worst part of the double-play came when Nyjer Morgan of the Nationals ran head-on into Brett Hayes, injuring Hayes in the process. The incident happened as follows. Morgan drew a walk off Clay Hensley in the 10th inning. With two on and one out, Adam Kennedy chopped a slow grounder to second.
Emilio Bonifacio collected the ball and flipped to shortstop Hanley Ramirez for the force out at second. Ramirez smartly didn’t throw to first, where he wouldn’t have had a chance to double up Kennedy.
The Marlin’s player had to have X-rays on his left shoulder to see if there was any damage to be seen, but still needs an MRI for more in-depth diagnostics. “Obviously, his track record doesn’t help himself,” Hayes said. “Somebody who does that is looking to hurt somebody. But, you know, it’s baseball.”
Hayes will be out for some time, saying that his range of motion in his arm is just not good. Marlins will have to make a roster move and add a catcher for Wednesday’s game.
There was a bench-clearing brawl in last night’s Marlins-Nationals game. Chris Volstad threw one behind Morgan’s back, and Morgan charged the mound. Was it because the Marlins were trying to get back solely because of the Morgan-Hayes collision?
Morgan threw a punch at Volstad, Volstad himself was tackled by a Nationals coach, and a big pile-up happened just to the right of the mound.
The game didn’t go right with Morgan from the start, when he ran over one catcher, objected to his benching for that act, to engaging with a fan, running over yet another catcher, stealing two bases, eyeballing a pitch thrown behind his back subsequently charging the mound, getting clothes-lined, throwing a few punches, and when it was all said and done, childishly throwing his hands in the air, and beating on his chest at the end of the game. By parading in this fashion, his credibility was in question as a sportsman.
The collision at home plate came on the heels of yet another controversial run-in Saturday. Bryan Anderson of the Cardinals is not in Morgan’s favor, either. Tony La Russa of the Cardinals will be keeping this in mind for the next time the two teams meet.
Morgan is already appealing a seven-game suspension for throwing a ball at a Phillies fan in mid-August. Maybe he needs to just clean up his act.
He is not really even a major player in the League, but is certainly making headlines like one. Could this be just a way for him to grab attention, and be in a higher-paying bracket? One will see how things pan out for this player.
