Shoya Tomizawa was only 19 years old. When he crashed he sufferred what was described as “substantial cranial, thoracic and abdominal trauma” and died at 2:20 p.m. local time, according to a statement on the official MotoGP website.
He was treated at the circuit’s medical center before being transported to a hospital in Riccione, Italy.
Tomizawa is the second motorcycle driver to die in the last few weeks as young Peter Lenz was also killed in a recent crash.
“Everybody involved in MotoGP extends its deepest condolences to Shoya’s family and friends at this tragic loss,” the motorcycling series said in the statement.
Video footage showed Tomizawa hitting his head on the track as his bike flipped over before the collision.
Tomizawa, who rode for the Technomag-CIP team, was treated by medics at the circuit.Earlier reports from the AFP news agency said the rider was propelled over 150 feet and off the track into the gravel.
Tomizawa was reported to have already been in a coma as he was rushed by ambulance to the Riccione hospital on the Adriatic coast. Efforts to save him failed and he passed away.
Despite Shoya Tomizawa’s death, the races continued even though some riders were reluctant to compete.
“I saw the incident on the TV monitor and I could see that it was serious – but not that serious,” MotoGP rider Valentino Rossi said.
“When these things happen, nothing else seems to matter.”

Hello Wilted,
It’s news. Pure and simple..it’s news. We mean absolutely no disrespect to the family and friends and have offered our condolences in the article. As with the Kennedy assasination or the Martin Luther King assasination or the Hurrican Katrina disaster, the news is the news. Family, friends and teammates do not have to relive the tragedy over and over as you say. They don’t have to view it.
However, if the general public has interest, and they do, then they have a right to see it, as we have a right to publish it. I saw your earlier comment that you tried to leave anonmously saying we had violated a copyright. Untrue, this is a news site and as such we are governed under the Fair Use exception. While YouTube may arbitraily remove videos based upon an unsubstantiated claim, we choose to assert our rights under the law.
That being said, we here truly do understand the sensitivity of this horrible accident and we wish the family, friends and teammates God’s blessings in their time of grief.
