Tiger Woods On Corey Pavin’s Team To Be In U.S. Ryder Cup

Tiger Woods On Corey Pavin’s Team To Be In U.S. Ryder Cup

Tiger Woods, even though he had no wins this season in eleven games, is still a genuine favorite for Corey Pavin. Pavin choose Woods as one of 4 captain’s picks with the announcement made on Monday at the NY Stock Exchange. Tiger Woods, along with  make up the rest of the team.

The Ryder Cup team will be facing Europe on October 1-3 at the Celtic Manor Resort in Wales, at Newport. This will be Wood’s first time out in the Ryder Cup since 2006, and came in at 10-13-2 in the 5 different entrances he participated in. His reconstructive knee surgery took him out of the 2008 challenge in Kentucky’s Valhalla contest.

Even though Tiger Woods was not in the Ryder Cup these last few years, the USA did defeat Europe without him in 2008, 16-1/2-11-1/2. The team had lost the prior years without Woods, however.

Everyone knows what Woods and his family have gone through, and it seems extraodinary considering all the dealings he has had with the press and world-wide attention to an extremely private matter. Woods has kept his composure for the most part, and is now the captain’s pick for the very first time. He is a fourteen time champion and winner of seventy-one titles on the PGA Tour, obviously one of the all-time golf greats.

This honor has merit in many eyes, although there are the nay-sayers, as well. Many say he has lost his focus, and is really not concentrating on winning in the true Tiger Woods fashion we have seen, his form is off, but his game has of late been quite good.

This is on the heels of his hiatus from the game, and it’s looking much better for Woods. In just the last 8 rounds, he posted 5 in the 60′s, and in the Deutsche Bank Championship ending on Monday last, for the first time in 2010, Woods made 60′s in three rounds, closing with a tie for eleventh place.

Zack Johnson is the only one of the four picks to have won this season, capturing the Crowne Plaza Invitational at Colonial. He also tied for 3rd at the PGA Championship. Johnson has only played in one Ryder Cup, going 1-2-1 in the USA’s skewed loss in 2006.

Steward Cink has 4 Top-20s in his last 4 events. The 2009 British Open winner played in the last four matches against Europe, with a terrific 4-7-4 record.

For Rickie Fowler, this will make his Ryder Cup debut. He as of yet, has not posted a top-10 since finishing second in the Memorial in June. However, he was undefeated in conducting the USA to victory last year in the Walker Cup.

Along with Woods and the four other players, there are eight others who have earned their way into the prestigious Ryder Cup this year, they are as follows. Masters winner Phil Mickelson, Matt Kuchar, Jim Furyk, Dustin Johnson, Steve Stricker, Bubba Watson, and Jeff Overton. With Watson, Kuchar, Johnson, and Overton in their debut at the Ryder Cup.

The hope is this year will be the first time that the USA will won the Cup since 1933, and with the talent coming out, there is a good chance of it happening this year.

The European team was finalized last week when captain Colin Montgomerie added Padraig Harrington, Edoardo Molinari and Luke Donald as his three captain’s picks. They join Lee Westwood, Rory McIlroy, Ian Poulter, U.S. Open champion Graeme McDowell, PGA Championship winner Martin Kaymer, Ross Fisher, Peter Hanson, Miguel Angel Jimenez and Francesco Molinari. The Euros have six rookies: the Molinari brothers, McIlroy, Kaymer, Fisher and Hansen.
