Where’s Everybody Else?

April 3, 2008

Real Estate News, Web 2.0, Real Estate Blogging

If you are reading this then you know you are ahead of most of those in the real estate business. More than likely you are and have been knowledgeable enough to know that embracing a Web 2.0 mindset is going to help you in your continuing endeavors in real estate.

We are convinced, we’ve been blogging for a little over 3 months and we have seen our numbers rise dramatically. In just under 90 days we are consistently averaging 2,000 or so unique visitors per day. We know of others in the real estate blogosphere who are receiving 4,000 or more UV’s per day. Wow!

We didnt have any prior experience. We jumped in head first and began reading and listening. We went to the altar of the RE.net and supplicated ourselves to “deities” of the industry. We read EVERYTHING on the rsspieces website.

We drank with great thirst from the trough set out for the dawgs in the yard over at Bloodhound. We spoke and read about them all..Seth Godin, Dustin Luther, Brian Brady, Laurie Manny, Pat Kitano…so many blogs, so little time. We even have spent hours lounging in the warmth of Active Rain.

Yet…. one thing makes me wonder. Where the heck is everybody else? I know that there are over a million real estate agents still in the game. I know from talking to industry research and educational leaders like Michael Russer, Stefan Swanepoel and Tom Ferry that there are only 1-3% of realtors actually blogging.

I can see on AR that there are only 45,000 or so members that are active real estate agents..and is doubtful that most of them are still actively pursuing blogging. So what’s the deal here. Has the novelty worn off already?

Is blogging like Paris Hilton and Britney… yesterday’s news? Are we trailblazers or clingons? Could the other 96% actually be the ones who get it and we are the ones who don’t?

When we interview a top blogging agent we always ask them, what are the other people in your office doing? The answer always surprises me. It seems we all are the outcasts, the freaks, the one in the office everyone is pointing at. Kind of weird isn’t it?

The Internet is an amazing thing. I can not remember the last time I picked up the yellow pages. If I need something it better be on Google or it doesn’t exist. Need a hotel..go to Google, need a caterer, go to Google, want to find out how to make a souffle, go to Google.

I wonder if maybe the other agents who are not blogging perhaps do not have Internet connections. That would explain it. I bet that’s what it is. If they were like the rest of us and they Googled everything they need then they would realize the great potential of the Internet wouldn’t they? I mean if they are Googling, wouldn’t they think their prospective customers were Googling?

I think I know the problem. They must not have computers or Internet service. Let’s start a blogosphere collection to make sure every agent has a computer and a wordpress theme. Or we can just say the heck with them and keep this all to ourselves. real estate news, real estate blogging, web 2.0

In this, an election year, I say we act like politicians and come up with some sort of agent bailout plan.

Let’s address the needs of the non-blogger and like good politicians, let’s reach into the pockets of those who are doing and those who have and freely give to those who don’t do and those who don’t have.

Call it a Blog tax, if you will. Sound reasonable?

It’s the only real solution. I already have the slogan, “Helping Realtors Help Themselves”.

Sounds like a plan.
