Just Google Them Dude
June 27, 2008

I had an appointment in Palm Beach County recently. As expected in the real estate business we were being interviewed along with several competitors. After a day had passed I was called back and given the business. When I met the client at the second meeting they introduced me to their children. A young lady and her twin brother just back from grad school . They were preparing to go out into the world and begin a journey on similar career paths. So young, so naive, so impressive, so Gen-Y.
After exchanging a collegiate story or two I sat down with Mom & Dad. They needed to buy a house or condo for each of the kids in downtown West Palm Beach. This was the promised reward for getting through school and the trust funds that were established could provide a good down payment toward each. The kids were going to work for a well known law firm, would eventually take the Florida BAR exams and become successful attorneys themselves, I have no doubt.
I always make a point of asking the client why they decided to choose GES Real Estate over the others. In this case I was even more curious being that the decision involved the kids.
“Well I have to admit, we weren’t sure about any of you” the Dad told me……. “We were having a tough time deciding but the kids kind of simplified things for us”.
I felt great and I needed to know what I said or did to deserve the nod. This is where I understood one important difference between Gen-X and Gen-Y.
The kids suggested that Mom and Dad “just Google them”. No need for a big presentation or sales talk. No reason to waste time. Just meet the dudes and than Google them.
How important is an online reputation? According to Wikipedia “one’s online reputation is similar to the conventional concept of reputation, but in cyberspace “.
Go ahead, Google me dude.
