American Idol Recap Last Night 2012 Season

Well we’ve updated this article as we begin the 2012 American Idol season. And although we only have one show under our belt we have an early favorite in Phillip Phillips Jr. (yeah…that’s his real name). Philly Phil ended the night in strong fashion with a great rendition of Stevie Wonder’s “Superstition” and then picked up the six string and gave us a really unique version of Michael Jackson’s “Thriller”.

I think he would have made MJ proud.

As usual we didn’t see a lot of the other contestants but there’s one contestant who is sure to get a lot more exposure. That would be Brittany Kerr. We’ve started a separate article for her. Check it out here.

Missing Indiana University  Student Lauren Spierer Not Involved In Altercation

As the search intensifies, there have been intimations  that the young woman was allegedly involved in an altercation.

Lauren Spierer, the 20 year-old who went missing on Friday early morning, has not been heard from since that night.

Bloomington police say a missing Indiana University student wasn’t involved in any altercations before she disappeared.

Lt. Bill Parker won’t discuss reports that a male friend with 20-year-old Lauren Spierer was in a fight with other men a couple hours earlier.

Parker said divers would return to nearby Lake Monroe after a search Wednesday turned up nothing. Hundreds of volunteers have joined in searches for the Greenburgh, N.Y., woman since she was last seen about 4:30 a.m. Friday walking alone to her apartment after a night of partying.

Her father, Robert Spierer, says a $100,000 reward is being offered for information leading to her return.

He asked Thursday that people living around Bloomington check wooded areas, barns or sheds on their property for any signs of her.

So far, there have been no person or persons who have come forward with any information regarding Lauren Spierer. Her family has been involved in the media, with press conferences and speaking on television shows to get the message out.

Shania Twain Takes A Fall During The CMT Music Awards 2011

As Shania Twain departed from the CMT Country Music Awards ceremony, she took a spill.  The famous singer was not injured, getting up and announcing the nominees just moments afterward.

Twain said about her injury, “I’m just trying to get all this adrenaline out because I just made a complete fool of myself and experienced one of life’s most embarrassing moments, and I’ve lived through that!”

Twain, who was tripped while presenting Male Video of the Year to Blake Shelton — said while laughing after the show.

Shania Twain’s fall at Wednesday’s Cmt Music Awards in Nashville appeared to leave the singer visibly shaken but the 45-year-old has since assured fans she was unhurt, reports Usa Today.

After being introduced by Kid Rock, Shania Twain made her way to the stage in the Bridgestone Arena before slipping and hitting the floor.

After quickly recovering, Twain began introducing the nominees for ‘Video of the Year’ but appeared to be holding her stomach and hips as if in pain. After presenting the award to Blake Shelton, Shania was given a warm round of applause by fans at the sold-out arena before exiting the stage.

The singer-songwriter posted a video on her official website shortly after the awards ceremony, assuring fans that she was ok, saying, “I didn’t hurt myself. I have a bit of a sore stomach – that’s about it”.

She also laughed about “making a fool” of herself, and claimed she would auction off the heels she was wearing, saying, “I never want to see those shoes again. Or maybe I should keep them as a souvenir?” Twain and Taylor Swift opened this year’s Cmt Awards with a pre-recorded ‘Thelma & Louise’ parody, also starring Chord Overstreet and Donald Trump.

Shania Twain is scheduled to release her first single in six years, ‘Today (Is Your Day)’ later this month. The singer-songwriter is also reportedly set to return to the studio to complete work on her fifth studio album.

The actor was taken off life support Thursday and died Friday morning at Encino Tarzana Medical Center, according to one of his managers, Kathryn Boole.

Lady Gaga Performs On “Good Morning America“ [Video]

Lady Gaga kicked off the ‘Good Morning America’ summer concert series (and the Memorial Day holiday) bright and early this morning with a four-song set and an empowering, inspiring message.

It was a homecoming show of sorts, since Gaga grew up only five blocks away from the studio. Her little monsters were lined up for hours in advance of the show — some for two days — and were ready to put their paws up once Gaga took the stage.

Mama Monster opened her set with ‘Bad Romance,’ arguably the hit that sent her career into the stratosphere. She didn’t appear on stage for the first verse and was singing offstage, while male and female dancers in black skirts grooved in unison. Finally, she arrived on the studded, patent leather stage via an aerial hand tram, first gliding across the crowd before making her landing. Now that’s how Gaga makes an entrance!

Gaga sported a white cloak and red and white head scarves, Cruella Deville style. She quickly removed her cloak to reveal a see-through red body suit before finishing the song. When the queen pop star sat down for an interview with Robin Roberts, thankfully, there were no Chris Brown-style outbursts!

“I live halfway between reality and theater at all times,” she told viewers. “I was born this way.” When asked about her outfit she lost track, spouting, “I love my fans, thank you for coming. They’re my family for sure.”

“‘Born This Way’ is about being yourself and loving who you are and being proud,” Gaga, who had a small black heart drawn on her right cheek to match her elaborate eyeliner, said as a chorus of screams and cheers erupted. “There is no dream that’s too big,” she finished, encouraging her fans to follow their hearts.

“I never thought about that part of it,” Gaga lamented about topping the Forbes Celebrity 100 list. “I thought about the music part and the instrument that I never learned how to play is my fans. They are the part of the story that no one teaches you. The word ‘power’ makes me uncomfortable. I want to do the right thing to be a voice with them and among them.”

She also addressed the epidemic of bullying and suggested that her young fans nurture those they witness being picked on, and sit with them in the cafeteria instead of shunning them.

That whole “Mother Monster” persona? That’s not false; Gaga has a real maternal connection to the little monsters. She took fan questions and said that there is no request too bizarre when it’s coming from her fans. When asked what she would do if she had one day off and could not be recognized, she said she would hang out with fans. And if she never got famous, she’d still be a singer, just not a famous one.

Gaga also spilled that she wears her Aunt Joanne’s birth certificate as a necklace, and her grandfather’s ring “every single day.” She also joked about home-cooked meals not being a matter of choice in an Italian home; you eat what they serve you.

Then, she took the stage to perform a second song, ‘Edge of Glory,’ penned for her late grandfather. She wore leopard print body stocking and another elaborate vampire princess headpiece, as well as a black mask and a shiny patent leather jacket with spiked shoulders and arms. It was reminiscent of ‘Transformers’ in an odd, street punk, dominatrix couture and utterly Gaga kind of way. The monsters put their paws up when she asked, and they jumped when she commanded them to.

Her third performance was ‘Judas, which was a theatrical, well-choreographed three minutes that had us bobbing our heads in our living room while we watched. ‘Born This Way’ was her fourth song of the set, and she donned a bold, gold jacket. She got into a see-through tub and engaged in a mud bath with her dancers as she cavorted in some sort of gray liquid. She improvised the song, but her husky voice carried across Central Park and resonated with every monster there — and it was absolutely adorable to see young girls in the crowd singing the lyrics back to her.

Gaga closed her set by playing the new song ‘Hair’ on her unicorn shaped piano. She pulled out a blonde wig and threw it atop her head, saying her wigs make her feel she doesn’t always have to be one person.

It would stand to reason that Gaga never sleeps, since she was in NYC promoting ‘Born This Way’ on Monday and the jetted off to L.A. on Wednesday to deliver a grand performance on the ‘American Idol’ season finale — and was sound-checking on the ‘GMA’ stage in Central Park at 7 AM today.

It’s going to be a long, hot summer of ‘GMA’ concerts, but even in the dog days of August, none will be hotter than Gaga’s show.

I doubt the tracks of Lauren Alaina’s tears are even dry yet as we see Fox roll out its other behemoth of a talent contest, the dance-off labeled, “So You Think You Can Dance“.

So just like American Idol, you’ll have to watch tonight from the initial So You Think You Can Dance auditions all the way to the finale so you can pick the eventual So You Think You Can Dance winner.

There are a lot of changes in store for the show but it features the return of fan favorite Mary Murphy, and one of the hardest working men in television, Nigel Lythgoe and the gorgeous Cat Deeley,tonight’s So You Think You Can Dance episode is a must see.

So You Think You Can Dance is back tonight (8/7c on Fox) with a few changes this season, including less All-Star action and more “amateurs,” executive producer Nigel Lythgoe says.

“What I wanted to try and do this year was to please everybody,” he explains. In Season 8, the show will return to the Top 20 finalists format, but introduce the All-Stars partners once the competition has moved to the Top 10 portion. There’s no guarantee though that favorites Allison Holker or Twitch will return since the All-Stars won’t be chosen until they see which finalists are in the Top 10.

Last year, Fox’s reality dancing show narrowed the final competition to a mere Top 11 dancers, who were then partnered with Dance All-Stars. Unfortunately, audiences — and probably judges, too — spent more time watching the All-Stars than focusing on the task at hand: Crowning the Season 7 winner of So You Think You Can Dance.

“A lot of people said they didn’t buy that,” Lythgoe says of introducing the All-Stars last season. “They wanted to see the interconnection between the — we’ll call them amateurs for the sake of the name — but the people had never been in competition before and [viewers] didn’t want them just going with an All-Star.”

Still, Lythgoe insists pairing the All-Stars with the competitors really “lifted their game immensely” and that “it gave them confidence because they were working with somebody in [their] genre.”

Among the other changes this season include bringing back “Hot Tamale Train” screamer Mary Murphy to join Lythgoe as a permanent judge. Murphy battled thyroid cancer and was replaced by choreographer Mia Michaels at the judges’ table last year. “I think she’s going to be a little quieter this season,” Lythgoe jokes. “Evidently, she is only as loud as a small hairdryer now, and not the jet engine she used to be.”

Meanwhile, the third judge’s seat…filled last season by Adam Shankman, who is now busy directing Rock of Ages…will be a revolving door of guest judges.

Why all the change? “I certainly feel as though I like to keep everybody on their toes,” Lythgoe says. “And more importantly, keep the show up-to-date, keep it relevant and keep it entertaining. And if you can continue to do that then I think you maintain a successful show.”

As for the dancers, Lythgoe notes there are less formally trained dancers, who he describes as “very, very interesting characters.” “We’re much more of a street nature. The kids that have come this season… are absolutely brilliant, and they are picking up ballroom and they are managing to do the Viennese Waltz — or the Vietnamese Waltz, as so many of them call it. We want to see something exciting, something that makes us go, ‘Wow, that’s great.’ So, I think that we’re delivering this year.”

CNBC Anchor Mark Haines Dies | Dead At 65

On Tuesday evening, 65 year-old CNBC anchor Mark Haines unexpectedly died at home from an as-of-now unknown cause. The journalist, who most recently was the co-host of the morning show “Squawk on the Street,” had been at the network for two decades and today CNBC is planning several on-air tributes to him.

Traders at the New York Stock Exchange had a moment of silence in his passing and his colleagues have eulogized him on Twitter. A light-hearted anecdote on the network’s “In Memoriam” release notes that he was fondly remembered for giving nicknames like “The Brain,” “The Kahuna,” and “The Professor” to colleagues while on the air.

Oscar-Winner Joseph Brooks Dead From Suicide ‘You Light Up My Life’ Songwriter Accused Of Rape

This is just breaking news. The Oscar-winner Joseph Brooks who was looking at a trial for raping up to 11 women has apparently committed suicide just last night.

In addition, his estranged son, Nicholas Brooks, 25, was awaiting trial for allegedly strangling his girlfriend, swimsuit designer Sylvie Cachay, in a bathtub within the private club Soho House last year.

Joseph Brooks, a one-time ad-jingle writer whose 1977 song “You Light Up My Life” won him an Oscar, a Grammy and a spot on the pop charts, killed himself in his Manhattan apartment Sunday, according to multiple news reports.

A friend who was to have lunch with Joe Brooks on Sunday alerted police, who found the songwriter with a plastic dry cleaning bag and a towel over his head. A hose attached to a tank of helium gas was near his lifeless body, reports New York’s Daily News. A suicide note was also left behind.

Debby Boone won a Grammy for her cover version of Brooks’s ballad “You Light Up My Life” from the movie of the same name – a romance that Brooks wrote, directed and produced. It starred Joe Silver and Didi Cohn and was panned by critics.

Oh, heavens. The beloved writer of You Light Up My Life Oscar-winning composer Joseph Brooks has landed in jail. In yet another headline-grabbing, men misbehaving news flash, the man behind the sweet song millions loved, has come up wanting for moral ineptitude.

The Oscar-winning composer behind ‘You Light Up My Life’ raped 11 women he lured to his apartment with the promise of a starring role in a movie, prosecutors said today.

The women read an online ad placed by director, Joseph Brooks, applied for the audition ‘and thought this was their chance to become a big star,’ prosecutor Lisa Friel said.

Brooks, 71, denied the accusations. He pleaded not guilty in Manhattan’s state Supreme Court, where he is being tried for 91-counts and charged with rape, criminal sexual act, sexual abuse, assault and other charges. He faces up to 25 years in prison if convicted of first-degree rape.

Instead, once the women were in Brooks’ Manhattan apartment, he plied them with wine and forcibly raped them or used threats and coercive behavior to make them have sex with him, prosecutors said.

District Attorney Robert Morgenthau said Brooks used his Hollywood credentials on the Craigslist classified ads Web site to attract the victims, aged 18 to 30. He said Brooks’ ad specified attractive young women for a starring role in a movie.

Morgenthau said nine of the 11 women were from the Portland, Oregon, and Seattle areas and the others were from California and Florida. He said Brooks paid to fly 10 of the women, who did not know each other, to New York.

He said Brooks’ scheme, which ran from at least 2005 to 2008, was enabled by his personal assistant, Shawni Lucier, who helped pick the victims, interviewed them, arranged their travel and made them feel comfortable.

He said that when the women’s mothers called, Lucier, of Federal Way, Washington state, would assure them their daughters were fine.

When Brooks was ready to strike, he said, Lucier would leave the apartment ‘knowing what the end result would be.’

Brooks became a suspect after one woman went to a hospital and reported what had happened and another complained to authorities in February and March 2008, prosecutors said.

Assistant District Attorney Maxine Rosenthal, the lead prosecutor, said she found other victims by searching Brooks’ and Lucier’s computers and cold-calling women whose names she saw.

‘We have records from his and his assistant’s computers that connect him to these women,’ she said.

There might be another seven or eight victims, she said.

Brooks’ lawyer, Jeff Hoffman, said his client ‘told me he didn’t do any of these things.’

He said Brooks, who suffered a stroke in 2008, ‘will have faith in the justice system.’

Lucier, 42, was indicted on nine counts of criminal facilitation and is expected to return from Washington state and surrender to authorities in New York City next week, Morgenthau said.

She has no attorney in New York and didn’t immediately return a telephone message seeking comment Tuesday.

He’s already accused of raping and sexually abusing 13 starlets – but Academy Award winner Joseph Brooks attacked at least a dozen other women, prosecutors said Friday.

Statute of limitation rules bar the District Attorney’s office from lodging charges related to the additional victims.

But prosecutors want the women to testify against the aging composer famous for the gooey ’70s tune “You Light Up My Life.”

The blockbuster revelations came at a routine pre-trial hearing before Supreme Court Justice Charles Solomon.

They also come on the heels of murder charges against Brooks’ son, Nicholas, for the bathtub slaying of sexy swim suit designer Sylvie Cachay last fall.

Assistant District Attorney Maxine Rosenthal said she has a dozen “uncharged” victims when Solomon asked about what witness information will be turned over to Brooks’ lawyer before trial.

“I’ve interviewed these women,” said Rosenthal, adding that she’d talked to as many as 50 women who had contact with Brooks in recent years.

Father and son had a contentious relationship, and the father had reportedly not contacted his son since his arrest.

Susan Karten, lawyer for the Cachay family, called it all a “terrible, terrible tragedy.”

“A father is accused of the sexual abuse of so many different women and the son is jailed on murder charges – it’s just a horrible mess,” she said.

Cachay’s family “doesn’t wish these people harm” and would not oppose the son being let out of Riker’s to attend his father’s funeral, Karten said.

“Even though he comes from a messed-up family, it’s still his biological father,” she said. “It doesn’t affect the murder case.”

After all this time, it seems that someone would have noticed that the man was indeed behind his own mask.

The words and song were beloved by millions. Brooks will inevitably have to face these fans and will not be able to explain himself to them.

Yet another failure in pop culture. Will we ever learn to not idolize them? And what a terrible ending for a very talented artist.

There are victims that are in disbelief that will never have their voices heard, now that Brooks has taken the easy way out.

Why Are Black Women Less Physically Attractive Than Other Women?

What a bombastic title! Surely the author of this study has some serious ‘splainin to do! I was looking for something a bit different to read this morning and this article from the Atlantic Wire surely fit the bill.

Readers of popular magazine Psychology Today were in for a grim surprise when they stumbled across the latest post by London School of Economics’ evolutionary psychologist Satoshi Kanazawa, titled “Why Are Black Women Less Physically Attractive Than Other Women?”

The article, based on data from a separate study on subjective ratings of physical attractiveness, made the following points (among others):

It is very interesting to note that, even though black women are objectively less physically attractive than other women, black women (and men) subjectively consider themselves to be far more physically attractive than others… Nor can the race difference in intelligence [...] account for the race difference in physical attractiveness among women.

The reaction to the piece was widespread outrage. Academics questioned the dubious method by which Kanazawa drew his conclusions from the data: PZ Myers, Associate Professor at the University of Minnesota, noted that the article “looks at such shaky subjective evaluations … without even considering the biases of these self-appointed judges”. And the blogosphere was even more aghast: The Root commented that the post “struck us as so outrageous that we almost thought it was a hoax of some sort”.

Psychology Today ended up pulling the post from its website altogether, reported Adweek. (It is still available here.) But the controversy is far from over. Kanazawa has been known for presenting controversial theories in the past, but this time he may have gone too far. Guardian reports that students at LSE are calling for his dismissal. The University of London Union Senate, which represents more than 120,000 students, voted unanimously for Kanazawa to lose his job.

LSE sought to distance itself from Kanazawa’s article, while still maintaining the importance of academic freedom. As it said in a statement:

The views expressed by this academic are his own and do not in any way represent those of the LSE as an institution. The important principle of academic freedom means that authors have the right to publish their views – but it also means the freedom to disagree.

Nonetheless, LSE students remain deeply offended. Amena Amer, the incoming LSE students’ union education officer, told Guardian:

We support free speech and academic freedom, but Kanazawa’s research fuels hate against ethnic and religious minorities promoted by neo-Nazi groups. Not only does he use the LSE’s credentials to legitimize his “research” but this jeopardizes the academic credibility of the LSE.

In response, LSE is conducting an investigation. Strict rules protect the academic freedom of professors, so by no means are consequences for Kanazawa guaranteed. The university will look at the data Kanazawa analyzed and the quality of his work before deciding if it can take punitive action.

Lady Gaga’s New Judas Video Leaked | Watch It Here [VIDEO]

Lady Gaga has released another video that is sure to stir up more controversy. Her latest video “Judas” is filled with imagery sure to tick off the Bible thumpers. She knows how to work the media and this video will surely have her on every blog and media outlet as it is bound to make a lot of Christians quite angry.

As a Christian myself, I can separate music videos from true blasphemy and guess what? I don’t feel the need to track her down and off her like some of our extremist friends from Islam would do if this video had Muslim overtones.

The video, which was co-directed by Gaga and her creative director Laurieann Gibson, is every inch the religious mini-film it’s been touted as. It’s supposed to “officially” debut tonight on E! at 7PM ET, with a short form version airing on ‘American Idol’ after 8PM ET.

With that being said, this is what we saw. The video opens with Gaga cruising on a stretch of freeway on the back of a motorcycle, clinging to the driver, who is wearing a crown of thorns. It’s Gaga portraying polarizing biblical figure Mary Magdalene and the driver must be Jesus Christ himself! The gang of bikers looks like the Hells Angels and they are coming to wreak some havoc.

An epic dance sequence unfolds in an exotic locale and Gaga sports her signature cat-eye liner, bold lips and dagger-shaped nails as she works up a sweat by dancing in a frenzy among her crew of dancers. There are several costume changes and plenty of haute couture fashion ensembles. In essence, it’s a Lady Gaga video through and through.

‘Judas’ is sure to piss off the conservatives and the Catholics, as Gaga’s parochial school upbringing and education influence the imagery in the video. Sure, she is perverting images that most people hold near and dear, but she is hardly being blasphemous. Consider the ‘Judas’ vid a modernized and informed update of a classic Biblical tale.

Gaga sports what looks like the Sacred Heart safety-pinned to her shirt in one scene and there is the symbolic and ceremonial washing of the feet, too. The betrayal, AKA the Judas Kiss, also happens. The most visually arresting scene is of Gaga appearing to walk on water, with a massive wave crashing at her back.

It’s an intense handful of minutes. It’s also a bold and beautiful short film.

Regardless of the religious nuances and innuendos, Lady Gaga does make for great entertainment.

US Weekly reports that 22-year-old Pia will record her debut album with Interscope Records. American Idol mentor Jimmy Iovine is the chairman of Interscope, so he was apparently quick to scoop up the obviously talented Toscano.

In her exit interview with the press, Pia expressed that she wasn’t upset about being eliminated, she was just excited about her future and to see what doors would open for her, so it looks like she really did have nothing to worry about.
