The Dukan Diet | Is It A Fad Or Will It Actually Help You Lose Weight?

Yet here again is another holy grail product being foisted upon the public at large. We all need to lose a few pound snow and then but why don’t we understand that the solution is quite simple.

Unless you have a health issue that prevents your body from regulating itself, losing weight isn’t hard to do. You simply need to spend more calories than you consume. Meaning exercise more to burn off the food we stick in our mouth.

It’s that simple…or at least it appears to be that simple. Anyone who has fought and lost the Battle of the Bulge knows otherwise. So we endeavor to find that next great way to help us lose weight. After all, we don’t want to have to work hard at it do we? Isn’t there a magic pill?

How can I look like a supermodel? What’s the real reason French women stay so thin? We actually have no idea, but if you believe the smooth words of the diet industry’s latest pitch man, it’s a diet he stumbled upon by accident four decades ago.

The man in question is Dr. Pierre Dukan, a 69-year-old neurologist whose books have already sold millions of copies and been translated into 14 languages.

Now Dukan is set to bring his gospel to America. Dr. Dukan, will this diet actually help me lose weight?

“My dear friends, today I am reaching out to you with the certainty that I can help you put an end to the inevitability of weight problems in North America,” he wrote in the preface of the American edition, according to the New York Times.

We sure hope so. With up to one third of Americans overweight or obese and type-2 diabetes on the rise, helping us drop a few pounds would be a welcome piece of cross-Atlantic good will.

But critics call Dukan’s diet plan either an Atkins retread or an unhealthy fad.

“This is just another one of those diets invented by a charismatic individual who makes a lot of promises and has loads of testimonials but is not based on any scientific data whatsoever,” Frank Sacks, professor of cardiovascular disease prevention at Harvard, told the Times.

The basics are a high-protein, low-fat approach, lots of water, all the oat-bran you can eat, lots of veggies, no fruit, and a few wine and desert days to make it all livable.

The exercise requirement sounds light enough for most Americans – 20 minutes of walking and no elevators.

Is There A Cure For AIDS In Sight? Stem Cell Research In Germany Breakthrough

As stem cell research continues around the world, German doctors have gone the extra step and claim that they have cured a man of the AIDS virus.

This astounding statement has the world’s rapt attention, as millions across the globe have perished from the debilitating disease that seemed to have no cure in sight.

For those people who still live with the virus, the hope is now more real, and to not have to live with the drugs that damage the internal organs would indeed be a boon to the world.

The man who doctors claim to have cured in Germany is an American ex-pat who has been ill with complications from HIV. He developed leukemia after contracting the virus.

Timothy Brown, the patient, was given chemotherapy along with stem cell therapy and is now in good health after the treatments. This is three years later, and in the medical journal ‘Blood’, study author Kristina Allers wrote; “Our results strongly suggest that cure of HIV has been achieved in this patient”.

Brown, 42, was found not to have any detectable HIV or cancer cells in his system after stem cells and bone marrow from a person who had healthy tissue and a genetic disposition that resists HIV.

The medical doctors in Germany have come to the conclusion that Brown is the first individual to ever have been cured of the virus AIDS.

With this cure, they could definitely open the doorway to a new way of combating the virus, to the benefit of the entire world.

The treatment was not without side effects. Brown developed neurological problems that caused temporary blindness and memory problems as well as difficulty with coordination and speech.

Dr. Gero Hutter, the lead doctor overseeing Brown’s treatment, told the German magazine Stern his team has “overthrown the dogma that HIV can never be cured.”

“Something like this is the greatest thing one can achieve in medical research,” he said.

This is a strong statement that the Germans are coming out with, and not to be taken lightly. The news services have been alive with speculation of the validity of the prognosis of Brown, as this could change the world’s health concerns over AIDS, and a cure would be one of the biggest health impacts in years, a historical medical bookmark would be made if the study has merit.

Sounds like something out of an Edgar Allan Poe novel or a Stephen King story but it is not fiction whatsoever. The “beating heart transplant is being successfully accomplished.

A small group of recipients around the globe have undergone a “beating heart” transplant an experimental operation in which the donor heart is hooked up to a special portable machine during transport to keep it ticking outside the body

Andrea Ybarra’s donated heart was beating rhythmically by the time she awoke from the grogginess of her surgery. In fact, it was warm and pumping even before doctors transplanted it into her body.

Ybarra belongs to a small group of people who have had a “beating heart” transplant. The donor heart is placed into a special box that feeds it blood and keeps it warm and ticking outside the body.

“It felt like the heart was a part of me all the time,” recalls the 40-year-old who suffers lupus.

Despite advances in heart transplantation, the way hearts are moved remains low-tech. Doctors and organ recovery specialists take an ice-packed cooler and head to a donor hospital where a heart from a brain-dead patient awaits.

Once a heart is removed, it’s a race against time. A heart can stay fresh in the ice cooler for four to six hours before it starts to deteriorate.

But what if a heart could beat on its own after removal from a cadaver?

It may sound quite macabre…actually I have to admit that it somewhat does. The new high-tech heart box circulates blood from the donor to the heart so that it continues throbbing while in transit from hospital to hospital.

Based on some success overseas, the University of California-Los Angeles is leading an experiment involving the new preservation method.

If the technology succeeds, “the rush factor will be taken out. I can go all the way to the West Coast to get a heart,” said Bruce Rosengard, who performed the first beating heart transplant in the United Kingdom in 2006.

In Ybarra’s case, the doctors traveled to the donor hospital in the Palm Springs area. Instead of packing the donor’s heart on ice, doctors transferred it to a box filled with blood and nutrients to revive it.

The heart was taken to UCLA, where Ybarra was placed on a heart-lung machine as doctors took out her failing heart. The new one was ticking nearby. Surgeons sewed it into Ybarra. All told, the donated heart had been beating in the box three hours.

Since her August surgery, Ybarra’s health has slowly improved. During a recent checkup, Ybarra had an echocardiogram, a sonogram of the heart. It looked normal.

Graphic Warnings On Cigarette Packs Approved By FDA [Video]

Cigarette warnings have been changed on packages for the first time in over twenty-five years. The depiction of deceased lungs, corpses, and other graphic images are disturbing to many, however, the Food and Drug Administration is backing up this move.

The decision to make cigarettes more unattractive to consumers has been pushed forward by proponents to stop people from smoking by using images that are disturbing to the consumer.

The warning labels will cover half of the package’s ront and rear, plus the top twenty percent of all cigarette ads. The statements on the package will not have the usual warning by the Surgeon General, but a much more severe admonishment by regulators.

They are hoping to stop young people from ever picking up their first pack, and by using the graphic images, they say this, “We want to make sure every person who picks up a pack of cigarettes knows exactly what the risk is they are taking,” Health and Human Services Secretary Kathleen Sebelius said at a news conference.

The Surgeon General also hopes that this extreme step will help smokers who are trying to quit to understand that smoking is dangerous, addictive, and may kill you.

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration unveiled 36 jarring labels Wednesday aimed to ramp up efforts to warn smokers of cigarettes’ fatal consequences.

These labels exercise the agency’s new authority over tobacco products and the most significant change in cigarette warnings since companies were forced to add the mandatory Surgeon General’s warning in 1965.

Some of the proposed images include a man smoking from a tracheotomy hole, a cadaver labeled to have died from lung disease, and a pained infant exposed to smoke.

The FDA will accept public comment on the proposed labels through January 2011, and will select nine to use by June 2011. The agency will then require all manufacturers to use the labels on all U.S. sold cigarettes by October 22, 2012.

“When the rule takes effect, the health consequences of smoking will be obvious every time someone picks up a pack of cigarettes,” said FDA commissioner, Dr. Margaret A. Hamburg.

The federal health care overhaul legislation is providing free access to anti-smoking therapies, and the stimulus package spent $225 million to support local, state and national anti-smoking efforts, officials said.

Taxes have been raised on cigarettes, and other measures have been taken to stop the illegal sale of tobacco products over the Internet and through mail order, including the illegal sales to youth.

Are You On That Four Loko? Beverage Banned At Ramapo University

For those of us who aren’t aware of the hugely popular drink, the beverage Four Loko is basically two beer’s worth of alcohol mixed with a healthy dose of caffeine in one can.

The users of the beverage claim that the high is different from hard liquor, and drinking a high energy drink loaded with alcohol is the latest craze among college-age kids.

Unfortunately, Ramapo University in Central Washington has seen students become violently ill, hospitalized, and requiring medical attention. They have subsequently banned the can from the university completely, after consideration and controversy from locals.

Four Loko is, essentially, the only kind of drink that would make you utter something as stupid as, “I’m on that Four Loko.” After coming under heavy fire since its inception, Ramapo University has taken a major step – Four Loko is banned from campus.

The Ramapo University Four Loko ban wasn’t a spur-of-the-moment decision: university president Peter Mercer banned Four Loko after a total of 23 individuals required medical attention after drinking it. Among those was a student whose blood alcohol level was .4, which is five times New Jersey’s legal limit.

Four Loko is sold in 23.5-ounce cans, and features 12 percent alcohol, more than double what you’d find in the average beer.

Only time will tell if this Four Loko ban is effective and whether other schools attempt a similar Four Loko ban.

It may happen – police at Central Washington University found that nine students who had passed out in what was believed to be a date-rape drug-related incident were actually drinking Four Loko. Currently, Washington state Attorney General Rob McKenna is calling for a state-wide Four Loko ban.

Green Tea Benefits It Helps Prevent Breast Cancer [Video]

Green tea is a wonderful drink. Green teas benefits are well known. It has all kinds of anti-oxidants, is known for helping you lose weight, and now it seems it helps prevent the occurrence of Breast Cancer.

In the pink month – the National Breast Cancer Awareness Month, we publish a report below to share with readers a study that suggests drinking green tea may help prevent breast cancer and recurrence of the disease.

Adeyemi A. Ogunleye at Harvard School of Public Health and colleagues reviewed previous studies and found there was an inverse association between drinking green tea and risk of breast cancer recurrence.

Green tea is commonly consumed beverage in Asian countries like Japan and China and it promotes apoptosis – programmed cell death in cancer cells in laboratory studies conducted by Rutgers University researchers and others.

The current study is a review based on two studies of breast cancer recurrence and seven studies of breast cancer incidence associated with drinking green tea published between 1998 and 2009.

Drinking more than 3 cups of green tea a day was correlated with 27 percent reduced risk of breast cancer recurrence, the review study showed. The risk reduction was statistically significant. 

An analysis of case-control studies of breast cancer incidence showed also an inverse association between drinking green tea and breast cancer incidence. The risk reduction was up to 19 percent, which was statistically significant.

However, cohort studies did not show an association between drinking green tea and breast cancer incidence.

“Available epidemiologic evidence supports the hypothesis that increased green tea consumption may be inversely associated with risk of breast cancer recurrence,” the authors wrote in the study report. 

“The association between green tea consumption and breast cancer incidence remains unclear based on the current evidence,” they added.

The study was published in Epidemiology. Breast cancer is diagnosed in more than 170,000 women and kill about 50,000 women each year in the United States, according to American Cancer Society. The disease will be diagnosed eventually in one in 7 women in their lifetime.

Many lifestyle parameters have been found potentially able to modify the risk of developing breast cancer and prevent the disease from recurring or prevent patients from dying of the disease.

Red Ribbon Week is the nation’s oldest and largest drug prevention program in the nation reaching millions of Americans during the last week of October every year.

By wearing red ribbons and participating in community anti-drug events, young people pledge to live a drug-free life and pay tribute to DEA Special Agent Enriqué “Kiki” Camarena.

Special Agent Camarena was an 11-year veteran of the DEA assigned to the Guadalajara, Mexico, office where he was on the trail of the country’s biggest marijuana and cocaine traffickers.

In 1985, he was extremely close to unlocking a multi-billion dollar drug pipeline. On February 7, 1985, he was kidnapped, brutally tortured, and murdered by Mexican drug traffickers.

His tragic death opened the eyes of many Americans to the dangers of drugs and the international scope of the drug trade.

Shortly after Kiki’s death, Congressman Duncan Hunter and Kiki’s high school friend Henry Lozano launched “Camarena Clubs” in Kiki’s hometown of Calexico, California. Hundreds of club members pledged to lead drug-free lives to honor the sacrifice made by Kiki Camarena.

These pledges were delivered to First Lady Nancy Reagan at a national conference of parents combating youth drug use. Several state parent organizations then called on community groups to wear red ribbons during the last week of October as a symbol of their drug-free commitment.

The first Red Ribbon Week celebrations were held in La Mirada and Norwalk, California. In 1988, the National Family Partnership (NFP) coordinated the first National Red Ribbon Week with President and Mrs. Reagan serving as honorary chairpersons.

The NFP estimates that more than 80 million people participate in Red Ribbon events each year. The campaign is a unified way for communities to take a stand against drugs and show intolerance for illicit drug use and the consequences to all Americans.

Schools, businesses, the faith community, media, families, and community coalitions join together to celebrate Red Ribbon Week in many ways, such as: sponsoring essay and poster contests; organizing drug-free races; decorating buildings in red; handing out red ribbons to customers; holding parades or community events; and by publicizing the value of a drug-free, healthy lifestyle.

DEA joins with community coalitions and prevention groups to plan and carry out Red Ribbon activities, ranging from classroom events to stadium-sized rallies.

In an alarming study released on Friday, it seems that Diabetes is growing into the epidemic that so many have feared would occur.

If the numbers in the study are correct, it is astounding how many people will be affected by Diabetes and high Diabetes blood sugar.

The number of American adults with diabetes could double or triple by 2050 if current trends continue, warns a federal government study released Friday.

The number of new diabetes cases a year will increase from 8 per1,000 in 2008 to 15 per 1,000 in 2050, predicts the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. By 2050, between one-fifth and one-third of all adults could have diabetes — with virtually all the increase attributed to type 2 diabetes, which is largely preventable.

An aging population, an increase in minority groups at higher risk for diabetes, and the fact that diabetes patients are living longer are among the reasons for the steep projected rise.

“These are alarming numbers that show how critical it is to change the course of type 2 diabetes,” Ann Albright, director of CDC’s Division of Diabetes Translation, said in an agency news release.

“Successful programs to improve lifestyle choices on healthy eating and physical activity must be made more widely available, because the stakes are too high and the personal toll too devastating to fail.”

Another expert agreed. “These data are accurate and reflect reality,” said Dr. Mary Ann Banerji, professor of medicine and director of the Diabetes Treatment Center at SUNY Downstate Medical Center, New York City. “Taking into consideration minorities and longer life expectancy, the real burden of diabetes is much greater than many people thought.”

Banerji believes that “we need to act now. Immediate changes in diet, physical activity, stress and sleep are known to decrease diabetes and obesity.

We can make changes in our physical environment to promote greater physical activity and we should consider changes in national food policy.”

Diabetes remains the leading cause of new cases of blindness under age 75, kidney failure, and preventable leg and foot amputation among adults in the United States, according to the CDC.

In addition, people diagnosed with diabetes have medical costs that are more than twice that of those without the disease, the agency reports.

The total costs of diabetes in the United States are an estimated $174 billion annually, including $116 billion in direct medical costs.

The projected increase in U.S. diabetes numbers reflects the global growth of the disease. About 285 million people worldwide had diabetes in 2010, and the number could swell to as many as 438 million by 2030, according to the International Diabetes Federation.

About 24 million Americans have diabetes, but one-quarter of them don’t know it. Older age, obesity, a sedentary lifestyle, family history, developing diabetes while pregnant, and race/ethnicity are risk factors for type 2 diabetes. Racial/ethnic groups at increased risk are African Americans, Hispanics, American Indians/Alaska Natives, and some
Asian-Americans and Pacific Islanders.

“The incidence of diabetes over the last few decades has progressively increased,” notes diabetes expert Dr. Jacob Warman, chief of endocrinology at The Brooklyn Hospital Center, New York City. “It is not surprising that with a flourishing of fast food chains and use of Internet and cable television, the population has become more sedentary
and overweight.”

However, regular physical activity and proper nutrition can reduce the risk of type 2 diabetes and help control the disease. To that end, the CDC has launched a campaign to reduce such risks in overweight and obese people, stressing dietary changes, coping skills and group support to help participants lose 5 percent to 7 percent of their body weight
and get at least 150 minutes per week of moderate physical activity.

Prevention programs that target at-risk groups can help reduce — but not eliminate — future increases in type 2 diabetes prevalence, the study said.

The study led by Antonia Trichopoulou from Epidemiology and Medical Statistics in Athens, Greece, along with colleagues from the Harvard School of Public Health showed that women whose diet was 2 points closer on a 0-9 scale to traditional Mediterranean diet were 22 percent less likely to develop breast cancer. 

For the study, the researchers followed up on 14,807 women in the European Protective Investigation into Cancer and Nutrition cohort in Greece for an average of 8.8 years and identified 240 incident cases of breast cancer. Participants’ dietary patterns were evaluated on a 9-point scale for similarity to the traditional Mediterranean diet plan. 

In the entire cohort, an increase of 2 points in the diet score was associated with a 12 percent reduction in the breast cancer risk. But the researchers said the association was not significant. 

A diet 2 points closer to the Mediterranean diet plan did not seem to reduce risk of breast cancer among premenopausal women, but among postmenopausal it was associated with a 22 percent reduced risk of breast cancer.

A health observer suggested that the Mediterranean diet plan may be more protective than what the study shows due to the possibility that the assessment of the study participants’ diets could introduce errors. 

Olive oil, a key component in the Mediterranean diet, has been associated with a lower risk of breast cancer, according to the background information in the study report by the researchers. 

Monounsaturated fatty acids in olive oil are at least partially responsible for the protective effect, the health observer suggested, because the use of olive oil means the participants used less vegetables oils such as corn oil and soybean oil, which contain tumor-promoting omega-6 fatty acids. 

Breast cancer is expected to be diagnosed in more than 175,000 women and kill about 50,000 each year in the United States, according to the National Cancer Institute. The good news is that breast cancer is in many cases preventable.

Boy am I glad that the media feeding frenzy over the ill-advised LeBron James/ESPN cluster@#&%, “The Decision,” is long past. It just demonstrated what we should have assumed all along, namely, that behind that façade of loyal and humble Cleveland homeboy was the usual narcissistic superstar athlete that we have come to expect these days. The clues were always there, of course, right in front of our eyes; the royal and religious nicknames (King James and the Chosen, the latter tattooed across James’s back like a billboard) and the third-person references (“I don’t think he ever cared about LeBron,” says LeBron).

But this post isn’t about LeBron James. It is about what I don’t care about, what we Americans seem to care about, and what I think we should really care about.

And let me make this very clear: I don’t care about LeBron James or Lindsay Lohan or Lady Gaga. And don’t even get me started on Snooki; at least the former three pop-culture icons have a talent for something. The reason why I don’t care about these four people, and the legion of other professional athletes, pop stars, celebrities, supermodels, actors, and the absolute lowest on the food chain, celebutantes who have no discernible reason for being famous (hello Kardashian sisters!), is that they are so phenomenally unimportant to our lives.

Okay, for you free-market types, I don’t blame them for taking advantage of the opportunities given to them by our popular culture; they are real entrepreneurs, filling a void in the marketplace with products — themselves — that many of our populace appear to want. And I will admit that they do boost the global economy to some small degree by generating ticket sales, advertising revenue, television ratings, magazine and tabloid sales, Web traffic, and don’t forget jobs, particularly for the assorted family and friends who comprise their all-important entourages.

It’s not like this absorption in the inconsequential is anything new. People up and down the socioeconomic and educational food chain have had a keen interest in the unimportant for centuries, even millennia, really for as long as we humans have had leisure time. This relationship between the citizenry and its idols is only more “in your face” now for the sheer frequency and intensity of exposure thanks to the explosion of new media in the last decade. In the past, there simply weren’t the means to become overly immersed in the immaterial. Now, between the Web, smartphones, twitter, RSS feeds, and the like, it’s possible to be connected to the insignificant almost every waking moment of every day.

But, really, what do any of these denizens of the “entertainment-industrial complex” bring to the table that makes them worthy of such widespread attention and adoration? Okay, LeBron James is a great basketball player, Lindsay Lohan seems to be a talented actress (when she isn’t in rehab or in trouble with the law), and, as for Snooki, she is a perpetual barely walking and barely talking train wreck in waiting. So, fine, watch a Cavs (oops, I mean Heat, sorry Cleveland) game, The Love Bug, or, if you really must, Jersey Shore, but do you really need to read, watch, talk, chat, text, post, and comment about it constantly?

Which raises the question: Why do so many care so much about so few who mean so little to our so busy lives?

Most people would say, they are, well, entertaining. Gosh, everyone has a right to spend their leisure time in whatever way they see fit. And, before I get accused of being one of those coastal intellectual elites, who I am to judge whether Beethoven is better than Jay-Z or Fellini is better than Atpow; to each his own. And I certainly have my own share of brain-dead entertainment attractions (I loved last summer’s GI Joe movie!). Perhaps it is just entertainment and this intense interest in the pointless doesn’t mean a thing. Heck, everyone needs to have a little escape periodically, even from the most interesting and meaningful life.

But the fascination that we have about the “celebusphere” seems far beyond just mere interest and entertainment. It isn’t just chatting it up around the water cooler at work for a few minutes a day. Instead, if you explore the web sites, blogs, chat rooms, and tabloids, it appears to be substantial chunks of people’s time. And I have friends who talk about American Idol or Top Chef as if it was the latest news out of Afghanistan or the upcoming elections; such was their level of investment and passion.

I have two concerns about this sort of preoccupation with the pointless. First, it worries me when people can’t find entertainment that has more immediate connection and value to their own lives. It would seem to me that entertainment that has such proximity would be more, well, entertaining. But maybe distance is the point, that with all that is happening in the world, the geopolitical unrest, economic crises, political warfare, environmental disasters, and other various and sundry tragedies and calamities, perhaps immersing ourselves in the triviata of popular culture is the equivalent of burying our heads in the sand; out of sight, out of mind. Hey, if we are powerless to do anything about what is happening to us, why even pay attention to it?

That question leads me to my second concern, that the 24/7 connection that people have with the unimportant prevents them from paying attention to what really matters in the world and, more importantly, to have an impact on what really matters. The reality is that there is a lot of stuff happening these days that needs our fullest attention and, furthermore, that we actually can do something about. But it requires an informed, invested, and energized citizenry to make the best decisions and to effect the most positive change. Just think what would happen if people devoted even half the time they spend on the inconsequential on that which is important and meaningful in their lives. Imagine the engagement and power we the people would have then.

Brian Wood Gave His Life Saving His Wife And Unborn Child

Brian Wood made a simple gesture that most of us hope we could make. He gave his life for those he loved.

Erin Wood appeared on the “Today Show” and told her tragic story. Her husband Brian Wood, died a hero.

Erin and her husband, Brian were traveling through Washington State when a Chevy Blazer skidded on the road and turned towards their car.

When Brian saw the oncoming car, he swerved in a way that would ensure that he took the force of the hit, and not his pregnant wife.

Erin said that she believes that her husband made a conscious choice to make sure to keep the oncoming SUV away from her side of the car.

Brian was killed instantly.

Brian Wood was the head designer for the computer game company, Relic Entertainment.

His funeral is planned for Sunday. Erin is 6 months pregnant and is due to have the baby at some point in November, and said that she will ensure that their child knows exactly why his father died at such a young age.

The driver of the Chevy Blazer was changing her sweater at the time of the crash and had another passenger take the wheel from her.

After the accident police found heroin, cocaine, marijuana, syringes and a pistol in the oncoming car after the crash.

Erin said that she would like to see her husband and give him a hug for his heroic effort, and is sad that she will not be able to.

A memorial trust fund has been created to support Erin and their unborn son.

The trust is accepting donations in person, via regular mail or through online payment in PayPal.

Do these people have no shame? I mean can they really be all that strapped for cash? Are they just merely into things for the big money grab?

Looking at their actions you’d have to concur affirmatively. Now, in the latest round of “pay up”, the Jackson Family is now suing AEG, the concert promoter on what was to be the tour of Michael Jackson.

Michael Jackson’s mother filed a lawsuit Wednesday accusing AEG Live of causing her son’s death by pushing him to rehearse for his comeback concerts despite poor health.

Katherine Jackson’s suit, filed in Los Angeles Superior Court, claimed that the concert production company controlled Jackson’s health because it hired and directed Dr. Conrad Murray.

Murray faces trial on an involuntary manslaughter charge for administering drugs to the pop star that the coroner ruled caused Jackson’s death in June 25, 2009.

The suit claims that Murray was “selected by, hired by, and controlled by AEG,” a worldwide concert promotion and production company.

Jackson signed a contract in January 2009 with AEG Live for a series of comeback concerts in London that would begin in July 2009.

FDA New Warning Contaminated Milk Recall In NJ, CN, MA, NY, And RI

This just coming out from the wires. FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE – September 8, 2010 – New York State Agriculture Commissioner Patrick Hooker today alerted consumers that Midland Farms, located in Menands, New York, is voluntarily recalling certain milk products due to the potential of improper pasteurization. Proper pasteurization heats milk in order to effectively eliminate all pathogenic bacteria, such as Listeria and Salmonella.

Well, just as you were dealing with the mass exodus of eggs on the shelves of your neighborhood grocer, milk may be disappearing as well. There has been a late-breaking story of milk being recalled in five northeastern states.

The sources say that the reason being given is that the milk had not been properly pasteurized in a large plant that supplies the states with milk. The plant is called Midland Farms and it is near Albany, New York. The company did agree to the recall just as a precaution. Bacterial contaminants may be in some of the milk that went out, such as salmonella, and listeria. So far, no reports on any illnesses from contaminated milk have been reported.

The milk was marketed under the brand names Midland Farms, Corrado’s Market, Jersey Dairy Farms, and Trade Fair Premium, according to New York regulators.

The milk – from pints to gallons – also went to stores in New York, Connecticut, Massachusetts, and Rhode Island.

Consumers should look for the plant code 36-1661 and a Sept. 24 date. Milk should be returned to the place of purchase.

Before you pour yourself or your kids a glass of milk today, you had better check the label if you live in one of five northeastern states. That’s because Midland Farms and the Food and Drug Administration-FDA,  have announced a voluntary milk recall.

Milk is pasteurized to eliminate disease-causing pathogens, such as Listeria and Salmonella, and to prevent milk from souring. Pasteurization involved heating milk at a temperature of 145 to 150 degrees F for at least 30 minutes or flash heating it to 160 degrees F for 15 seconds. The temperature is then reduced to not more than 55 degrees F.

Symptoms of Listeria (a condition known as listeriosis) include fever, muscle aches, and sometimes gastrointestinal symptoms such as diarrhea and nausea. Infrequently it spreads to the nervous system and causes headache, stiff neck, confusion, and convulsions.

Symptoms of Salmonella infection are similar and include nausea, vomiting, abdominal pain, diarrhea, fever, chills, headache, muscle pains, and bloody stool.

Gallons, half gallons, quarts, and pints are involved in the recall, and the milk products include reduced fat, low fat, fat free, and whole milk varieties. You can see a complete list of each of the brands on the FDA recall website.

Thus far, no health problems have been associated with the recalled milk products. If you or your family experience any of the symptoms mentioned above after consuming these products, contact your physician.

The New York State Department of Agriculture and Markets’ milk inspectors discovered failed pasteurization equipment at the Midlands Farms plant in Menands, New York, on September 7 during an inspection.

Newlywed country music queen, and former American Idol winner, Carrie Underwood has revealed she used to suffer panic attacks in crowded shopping malls and elevators.

The “Jesus Take The Wheel” singer, who recently revealed she likes to shop for groceries in empty supermarkets at midnight, admits she used to have a big problem with personal space when she was a teenager growing up in Checotah, Oklahoma.

She recently told WebMD in an interview, “I’m a big personal space person. You know, if you go to the restroom, you use the stall that’s not near anybody. Or if you’re in the gym, you go to the treadmill where there’s space in between you. And it seemed like in crowded situations like that, people would just completely violate your personal space.”

She tells the WebMD that Christmas shopping was “my worst nightmare” and reveals she still has moments when crowded elevators make her start sweating – like one that took place just a day before her interview.

She explains, “Every floor we stopped on, we’d cram more people in, and by the time we were done, there was just a ton of people.

“So I start thinking about all the bad things that can happen, and I’m like, ‘I’ve got to get off the elevator, I need to get off the elevator.’ I was just like, ‘No more stops, please, no more stops!’”

Judge Grants Injunction To Stop Federal Funding For Stem Cell Research

I can hear it now. All of the Creationists on one side and the Scientific crowd on another. The argument can wage on for timeless infinity and we’ll never come to an agreement.

The bottom line is if this technology saves lives, should it not be considered viable? I understand that stem cells can be culled in other means, but do we need the Court system to render an opinion on this? I guess so!

A U.S. district judge granted a preliminary injunction Monday to stop federal funding of embryonic stem cell research that he said destroys embryos, ruling it went against the will of Congress.

The ruling by Judge Royce C. Lamberth was a blow to the Obama administration, which last year issued guidelines to allow federal funding for embryonic stem cell research.

Lamberth’s ruling said all embryonic stem cell research involves destroying embryos, which violates the Dickey-Wicker Amendment included in federal spending bills.

“The Dickey-Wicker Amendment unambiguously prohibits the use of federal funds for all research in which a human embryo is destroyed,” Lamberth’s ruling said. “It is not limited to prohibit federal funding of only the ‘piece of research’ in which an embryo is destroyed. Thus, if ESC [embryonic stem cell] research is research in which an embryo is destroyed, the guidelines, by funding ESC research, violate the Dickey-Wicker Amendment.”

The field of embryonic stem cells has been highly controversial because the research process involves destroying the embryo, typically four or five days old, after removing stem cells. These cells are then blank and can become any cell in the body.

President Barack Obama signed an executive order in March 2009 that repealed a Bush-era policy limiting federal dollars for human stem cell research. Obama’s act permitted the National Institutes of Health to conduct and fund studies on embryonic stem cells.

Some scientists believe embryonic stem cells could help treat many diseases and disabilities, because of their potential to develop into many different cell types in the body.

While some advocates praised the executive order as a giant step forward for medical research, conservatives groups objected, contending that the destruction of human embryos ends human life.

The participants, from the Nurses’ Health Study II, said their own alcohol consumption and also, over the course of the study, reported whether a doctor had diagnosed psoriasis.

The researchers found that even relatively moderate amounts of beer seemed to increase the risk of psoriasis, with 2.3 drinks a week driving up the risk almost 80%.

And five beers a week more than doubled the risk of being diagnosed with this skin condition, as compared with those that did not drink at all.

“We can say that if a woman would like to consume alcohol and if she has a family history of psoriasis or known psoriasis in the past or some other reason she might be predisposed to psoriasis, the alcohol of choice probably should not be nonlight beer,” said Dr. Abrar A. Qureshi, lead author of the article appearing in the December issue of Archives of Dermatology.

But Bruce Bebo, director of research and medical programs at the National Psoriasis Foundation, feels the findings “need more investigation to determine whether there’s a real connection or not.”

And on the question of drinking in general, he added, “from the point of view of the health-care provider, trying to limit alcohol consumption for lots of reasons is important. If this encourages people to limit alcohol consumption, I think that’s a positive outcome, but I don’t think the National Psoriasis Foundation or any physician group would make a recommendation.”

Previous studies have found an association between alcohol and psoriasis, although the reasons for this link were not clear.

“There is evidence that alcohol consumption can affect immune responses and psoriasis is an autoimmune disease,” Bebo said. “There’s also some evidence that it can affect the biology of (the skin cells known as) keratinocytes. But … then why would it be nonlight beer, why not wine or other alcohol? Maybe there’s something in wine that … might reverse the effect.

“When we looked up the components of different alcoholic beverages, one thing that stood out for nonlight beer was the amount of protein, gluten in particular,” said Qureshi, who is an assistant professor of dermatology at Brigham and Women’s Hospital and Harvard Medical School in Boston. “When we stumbled on this, we realized that there have been reports in the past that ingested gluten was associated not just with psoriasis worsening but other autoimmune diseases, such as celiac disease.”

Another study in the same issue of journal found that psoriasis carries a heavy mental health burden, with people who have the disease suffering higher rates of depression, anxiety and even suicidality.

The link was more pronounced in men, according to the researchers from the University of Pennsylvania in Philadelphia.

A third study in the journal reported that treating psoriasis with narrow-band UV-B light rays may increase vitamin D levels in patients and help reduce the burden of the disease.

But the Irish authors, who reported various financial ties with pharmaceutical companies, don’t believe that the higher vitamin D levels actually were responsible for the psoriasis clearing.

Patrice Carter, a research nutritionist at the University of Leicester, and colleagues reviewed six studies involving more than 220,000 people that focused on the links between fruits and vegetables and type 2 diabetes.
