Florida Attorney General Announces Investigation Of Law Firms Handling Foreclosures

The Florida Attorney General’s office announced that it is investigating a few of the largest foreclosure mills operating within the State. These law firms, which represent some of the biggest lenders who are foreclosing on homeowners, have been accused of “rubber-stamping” foreclosures for years.

We have written about it many times here and it’s no secret to us what’s been going on. Now it seems the Florida Attorney General’s office is finally going to do something about it. You don’t think this it’s a coincidence that he has a big re-election campaign that hasn’t been doing all that well do you?

In any event, Bill McCollum’s office announced the probe Tuesday against The Law Offices of Marshall C. Watson in Fort Lauderdale, Shapiro & Fishman in Tampa, and The Law Offices of David J. Stern in Plantation.

The case is being handled by the attorney general’s Economic Crimes Division. McCollum says they’re investigating whether the firms created and filed fraudulent documentation to speed up foreclosure proceedings.

They won’t have a hard time proving this. One wonders what will happen in regards to the thousands of homes lost to foreclosure and the tens of thousands of homes that are pending foreclosure.

Attorneys for Shapiro & Fishman and Stern’s firm deny wrongdoing, but say they’ll comply with the subpoenas. The Marshall C. Watson firm declined comment. Representatives from David Stern’s office were seen packing and heading for the border…just kidding, but maybe they should be.
