Have you been struggling to make money in social media. Well struggle no more!
Today’s Question comes from Karen G from New York City and Karen wants to know How do you make money in social media? Seriously, she actually said, that.. Sounds like someone has been buying too many courses or listening to too many social media experts.
I love it when I get asked this. In my experience it’s one of the most asked question in seminars, meetings and in comments to my articles. It amazes me how many people want to know how to make money in social media.
What’s funny is that when I hear the question I realize that the person asking it probably won’t like my answer.
You see my answer to the question is simple. You don’t make money in social media. Now if that’s the first time you’ve heard someone come out and say that I apologize. But it’s true.
You see there is no “business” called social media. And as such, since there’s no business called social media, there’s no way to make money from it nor measure it to determine how much money is made from it.
Let me go ahead and put a giant asterisk to what I just said. I’m not counting the throngs of “make money online gurus whose job it is to take your money and tell you how to make money in social media.
Some of them make some cash, but really, c’mon…is that really a sustainable business? I won’t go further as that’s a subject for another day.
But I’m talking about you who have real business to tend to. I’m talking about those of you whose business is actually to move products off of shelves, to acquire customers for your services, to put butts in seats, and to make the turnstiles turn.
In that regard, you better not be looking to make money in social media. You actually have your product or service to generate revenue with.
So what good is social media? Well, it’s a viable medium that will enable you to eventually sell more stuff, if you harness it’s power. It’s a means to an end. It’s not the revenue generator.
Your focus needs to remain on your business with a healthy dose of social media marketing utilized to help you mainly do 3 things.
1. Increase your overall brand awareness.
2. Grow your customer base by generating qualified leads.
3. Help you retain and engage your existing customer base.
If you succeed in those three endeavors, you’ll easily see how social media can help you derive a significant level of conversions from leads to customers.
So top trying to make money in social media. Instead, start looking at social media as social fuel. It’s the hi-octane accelerant that will help you improve your overall bottom line.
I, like many in the biz, listen now and then to some of the musings of Gary Vaynerchuk. One day I heard him speak and something he said resonated inside of my head and it was just a passing sentence that not a lot of people took note of but I walked away with a new view of social media after hearing it and I have since imparted that nugget of brilliance to all of my clients since then.
He said…”If you don’t understand how eyeballs turn into cash…then you don’t know business.”
Social media isn’t the holy grail. It merely clears the path for us to get there in a way that no other medium has before it.
Don’t look for social media to make you money. Look for social media to help you generate more revenue by expanding your customer base, helping you to retain existing customers, and providing for meaningful brand awareness and messaging.
If your social media campaigns aren’t designed with that in mind you might be sitting in another conference room in the near future shaking your head saying social media doesn’t work.
