Social Media Marketing : Are You Really Engaged?

I’m going to lay out a scenario and tell me if this describes your strategy in regards to social media.
You’ve decided to jump in with both feet. It may have taken you a while but now you’re ready to take on this social media craze and make it work for your business. You’ve been Tweeting and Facebooking but now you’re convinced that social media doesn’t work…well my friend, 1 Billion people can’t be wrong!
So you’ve set up your Twitter account, You have your Facebook page (your business page that is…we’re not talking about your personal profile here…that doesn’t count), You’ve got your foursquare account configured and maybe..just maybe you’ve opened a YouTube account and you’re ready to tackle making some videos. And let’s not forget Google Plus.
So you start tweeting, you’re making Facebook updates, you’re posting videos and you’ve been at it for the last month and you’re really not seeing anything happen for you. Sound familiar?
We talk to a lot of business owners who say that they’re not really seeing anything happen. They’re out there in social media but they can’t seem to drum up any real interest. So they get discouraged and some throw in the towel and say it doesn’t work.
Well maybe, just maybe, what’s going wrong is that while your posting Tweets and updating Facebook and producing videos, you’re doing a lot of talking…but not enough listening.
There’s not a lot of interest in interacting with someone who is “that guy”. You know..the one way type. Mr. I’m this or I’m that…
You see what makes social media so great isn’t because of what you can SAY to others but rather what you HEAR from others.
The old saying is that God gave us two ears and one mouth so that we could hear twice as much as that we say. Well he also gave us 2 eyes as well. So in truth we should be listening and seeing 4 times as much as we are talking.
If you want your social media efforts to multiply then begin listening more. Use Twitter search and find out what other people are saying and talk to them about what they are interested in.
For instance if you own a restaurant, find out what the foodies in your area are talking about and join the conversation. Don’t tell them about your daily special…if they are interested in what you have to say they’ll check you out.
Participate in enough conversations and you’ll grow a meaningful and relevant group of followers and fans. That’s how you successfully engage and grow your business on social media.
Think I’m wrong? Try it for the next 30 days and see for yourself. After all it won’t cost you a dime and could change the way you do business forever.
